Nappy cake preparation

I love making nappy cakes for women who are expecting. Usually when I tell people that I am making a nappy cake for a pregnant woman they think that i am making an edible cake that looks like a nappy. Usually I get a look from them that says "yeah, great idea - but did you maybe want to get her something she can use??"

Little do they realise that the mother to be will be able to use every bit of the nappy cake and my present will look sooooo much better than theirs :)

The general idea of is that disposable nappies are used to create a 2 or 3 tier cake. Inside a ring of nappies I cram lots of baby goodies and more nappies. Then I top the cake off with a soft toy for the baby.

Today I have started to prepare bits and pieces to go inside the nappy cake. Ages ago I bought about 2.5 meters of some cute girl and boy print muslin material, that I have now cut up and sewn into baby muslin wraps. Not only are muslin wraps very useful, they are cheap to make!

So, I have muslin wraps ... what else??

  1. Burp cloths are so handy - I use soft flannel to catch dribbles while feeding, throw it over my shoulder for burps and have one or two always on hand to wipe up when bubs throws up small amounts unexpectedly that a bib doesn't catch. And the Huggies baby wipes travel packs are indispensible for not only nappy changes but also wiping sticky hands, shopping trolley handles and cafe tabletops when out and about. Nappysacks - dirt nappy bag and general rubbish bag in one. I sound like an ad for baby products but these really are the things I find are most useful. If I think of any more I'll let you know.

  2. Thanks! Most of those items I put in the nappy cakes ... i just made one with mini baby oil, powder, shampoo etc and nappy bags, wipes & the muslin wrap I made and a toy to go on top. I found it challenging trying to fit it all in - especially when most of the items are hard edged and dont mould/bend. When im using items that wont bend/flex I need to use more nappies to fill in the gaps so that the overall shape of the cake is still a circle.
I have thought about making a square cake, the only thing is when i tie the ribbon around the layers it will end up an odd shaped circle anyway.
hmmm ... much to play around with.

  3. For a square cake you could try a thin cardboard rim inside the first layer of nappies which will help hold the shape ??
